Zimmermann Covered Yarns
In the winding process, a core is fed through one or two flange bobbins. In an upstream process step flange bobbins are filled with the winding material in on spooling machines. The flange bobbins rotate at high speed around the pre-tensioned core, which is fed through the hollow axle in the center. This creates a so called balloon (picture above). Depending on the application, elastic materials (elastane, rubber, silicone), tear-resistant materials (carbon, glass fiber, aramids), or electrically conductive materials are used in the core. Skin-friendly or functional yarns such as polyamide 6.6 (nylon), polyester, wool, cotton, or viscose are generally used in the first and second windings.
The winding process allows the functions and properties of different materials to be combined: elasticity or tear resistance with a skin-friendly feel, abrasion resistance with moisture transport, electrical conductivity with textile properties and many more. In the case of elastic covered yarns, the mechanical properties are also specifically adjusted to the customer’s technical requirements by selecting the elastane, the number of twists, the wrapping material, and the preload of the core.
Depending on the direction of twist, a distinction is made between Z‑twist (wrapping material twisted clockwise) and S‑twist (wrapping material twisted counterclockwise). Depending on the construction, a distinction is made between single and double covered yarns. Double covered yarns usually have opposite directions of twist in each cover, which makes the double covered yarn more stable and less prone to looping.
